SPARTANS FINISH THE SEASON ON A STRONG NOTE!

Posted Thursday, November 15, 2007 by Frank Cristiano

THE 2007 SEASON FOR THE NEW HARTFORD SPARTANS FOOTBALL PROGRAM WAS A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE. HAVING STARTED OFF THE REGULAR SEASON WITH THREE CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE LOSSES, THE HOPE OF PLAYING IN A SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE SECTION PLAYOFF LOOMED FAR OFF IN THE DISTANCE. BUT WITH PROMISING FINAL LEAGUE WINS OVER ONEIDA AND NOTTINGHAM THE SPARTANS SQUEAKED INTO THE 7TH SEED OF THE PLAYOFFS WITH A 3-4 REGULAR SEASON RECORD. AT THIS POINT THE ROLLERCOASTER DID NOTHING BUT GO UP! WITH SECTIONAL QUARTERFINAL WIN VS. THE E.S.M. SPARTANS BY A SCORE OF 20-14, AND A HUGE WIN AGAINST CROSSTOWN RIVAL WHITESBORO (WHO DEFEATED THE SPARTANS IN THE REGULAR SEASON 21-18) IN THE SECTIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME BY A SCORE OF 22-15, THE SPARTANS FOUND THEMSELVES IN UNCHARTERED WATERS WITH A SECTIONAL FINAL GAME VS. #1 RANKED CARTHAGE COMETS. A REGULAR SEASON LOSS BY A SCORE OF 28-14 WOULD NOT DETER THE SPARTANS, AS THEY WENT OUT AND GAVE A SPIRITED EFFORT AFTER FALLING BEHIND 14-0 AT HALFTIME. WITH A SECOND HALF RALLY WHICH BROUGHT THE SCORE TO 21-14 AND A FIRST AND GOAL AT THE CARTHAGE 7 YD. LINE WITH 8 MINUTES LEFT IN REGULATION, IT LOOKED GOOD FOR NEW HARTFORD. HOWEVER, THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE RAN OUT OF GAS AND THE SPARTANS STUMBLED, FAILED TO SCORE AND FINSISHED OUT THE GAME BY THAT SAME EXACT SCORE OF 21-14. ALL WAS LEFT ON THE FIELD THAT NIIGHT AND THE SPARTANS COULD HOLD THEIR HEADS UP HIGH KNOWING THAT THEY GAVE THE ULTIMATE EFFORT TO BRING THE FIRST SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TO NEW HARTFORD IN 14 YEARS. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL INVOLVED IN THIS UP AND COMING PROGRAM AND WE HOPE TO HAVE YOU ON BOARD FOR 2008!
